Emi Electra is an interdisciplinary artist with an MFA in Film from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a BFA in Sculpture from SUNY Purchase. She is currently working in Buffalo NY as an experimental painter, fashion designer, writer, and director.
Her original productions bend the mind with twisted plotlines and explosive imagery, utilizing a signature visual style that is trademarked by atmospheric lighting and unearthly costumes and settings, all constructed by hand. Her deconstructed garments and sculptural canvas pieces are an excavation of the collective unconscious down to its blackened, rotting depths. Everything is unified by a distinctly female gaze which invokes a discussion of trauma, mental illness, and altered states of being. The work is occult in the sense that it reveals the unseen, speaking directly to the unconscious via symbol and metaphor, color and sound.
